The Hannover International Summer School of Economics and Management (HISSEMA) is in its seventeenth year of operation. Up to now, over 200 international students have participated. The program is entirely conducted in English.

Hannover, capital of the federal state of Lower Saxony, is located not far from Berlin and Hamburg. It is a headquarter of world-known companies such as Volkswagen, Continental, Sennheiser or Bahlsen and a modern, green and lively city in the middle of Europe.

Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) has over 29.000 students. Its School of Economics and Management belongs to the leading ones in Germany, ranked as no.1 in the North of Germany.

At the School of Economics and Management of the Leibniz University Hannover. Hannover is a mid-size city in the North of Germany, located not far from Berlin or Hamburg.

HISSEMA offers lectures in International Management and Business Administration with topics such as the German Economy, its integration into the European Union and the World Economy. The program is supplemented by lectures on the “German Culture, Business and Language”.

German HISSEMA students will be assigned to the international students on the first day of arrival in Germany.

AccommodationStudents will stay in student dormitories close to the School of Economics and Management.
Costs in Hannover1.000 € in total including accomodation, field trip to Berlin. The payment is due 30 days prior to the start of the program.
RequirementsStudents admitted to this program must be at least in their second year of university or college and be majoring in the fields of Business or Economics.

HISSEMA 2020 at a glance


The HISSEMA offers lectures in the areas of Business Administration and Economics with topics such as the German Economy, its integration into the European Union and the World Economy. The program is supplemented by lectures on the German Culture, Business & Language and an excursion to the capital city Berlin. All courses are worth 6 credit points (ETCS). In total, 18 credit points can be achieved. Acknowledgement depends on the regulations of your home university.

The curriculum topics are divided into three parts (courses of 2020):

  • 1) German Culture, Business and Language
    • German language class
    • Lectures on German business administration
    • Trip to Berlin to provide insights into German culture, politics and history
    • Students are required to make presentations, to prepare case studies, and to submit homework referring to aspects of the cultural, economic, political, and educational systems of Germany – all the topics are prepared during the lectures in class and the Berlin's study trip.
  • 2) The German Economy and the European Union

    The module "German Economy and the European Union" will presumably consist of the following parts:

    • The German Labor Market
    • Germany and the European Union
    • Climate Change and the European Union's Common Agricultural Policy

    It is necessary to pass a final exam to achieve credit points.

  • 3) International Management and Economics

    The module "International Management and Economics" will presumably consist of the following parts:

    • Environment and Development Economics
    • Trade and Competitiveness
    • CSR and Business Ethics.

    It is necessary to pass a final exam to achieve credit points.

    In total, 15 credit points (ECTS) can be acquired. However, acknowledgement of credit points depends on regulations at your home university.



Application fee: € 1.000,00 including tuition, accomodation, public transport in Hannover, study materials, use of the faculty libary, computer rooms, free Wi-Fi, social events, a welcome package and a 3-day-excursion to Berlin (food and drinks not included). Additional fees for optional excursions.


  • 1) Filling in the online application

    At first, you have to fill in our Online Application (please, choose GUEST as Mobility programme.) After completing your data, you will be shown a test site where you can check the submitted information, make corrections if necessary and then send electronically. After submitting your data, a PDF-document will open with your application form. Please print this document. If you do not have access to a printer at the moment, you can also save the document first and print it later. 

    If you wish to change the data after the electronic transfer of your online application, please repeat the entire process. On the basis of date and time, we are able to retrace which is the recently received and presumably conclusive application that you have submitted.

    Students of our partner universities have to submit an online application singed by the international exchange coordinator of the home institution. The candidates have to be nominated by the home university by the end of the application deadline on March 1, 2020.

  • 2) Collecting all necessary documents

    Please supplement the printout of the online application with a passport photo and sign it.

    Please note that we can only accept applications in which sufficient language (German and/or English) skills can be attested by the home university. 

    Furthermore, you have to attach a letter of motivation and a current Transcript of Records, showing the courses and/or modules you have studied so far at your home university.

  • 3) Sending your application via mail

    Please send your application to guest@wiwi.uni-hannover.de in only one document and make sure the complete application with all documents will reach us via mail not later than March 1st, 2020!

After having received your written documents, having examined your application and being accepted by the HISSEMA, we will send you an acceptance letter along with the signed forms and additional important information.

No additional forms are required at this present time. Please do not send any registration forms to us or any other office at Leibniz Universität Hannover. The registration will be held during your first days in Hannover.
