Workshop: "Information, Control and Communication",
Berlin, April 10-12, 2008
Members of the Young Academy at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina.
In this workshop, we will assess the role of information theoretical concepts in different disciplines, ranging from quantum mechanics to economics, machine learning and animal cognition. We aim to foster the cross-talk between these different disciplines by considering how terms such as "information", "inference" and "communication" are used in the different areas represented.
Further, we will discuss whether current concepts need to be refined or revised to integrate recent findings from e.g. quantum computing. Finally, we explore systems of information exchange and information transmission from an evolutionary perspective. Each speaker will hence be requested to specifically address the issue of how the key terms are defined and applied in their specific discipline, and where they see room for a revision of present concepts.
